Edward Akki

Edward Akki entered the military forces at the age of 17. Akki first enlisted in the US Coast Guard in December 1945 on the island of Oahu and then went 6 years in a military academy with two of his high school classmates and then enlisted with US Marine Corp, he was on active duty for 19 years.


Edward Akki is a local Hawaiian that grew up on the island of Oahu. When school was coming to an end, Akki enlisted to the US Coast Guard served two years and then afterwards joined in the reserves because of two classmates from his high school, the three of them experienced 6 years of military lifestyle in the military academy. Akki then joined the marines and went to Korea in 1953 during the Korean War and served active duty for 19 years. While Akki was in Korea, he served on the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) in the 39th Parallel. Akki talks about his experience in Korea he says, “It was very cold in Korea, when you first hear the crack of a bullet you hear ‘Condition Charlie’ which means get down.” In Korea, the weapon he carried was a BAR, which was a Browning Automatic Rifle with that he carried 12 magazines, each magazine weighed 2 pounds.

After the wars, Akki just settled down and went to go search for a different job and spend more time with his family between Hawaii and Oregon.
