Fred Hisaw enlisted for WWII in the spring, around March time, of his 17th year. His father had fought previously in WWI and Hisaw felt it was his duty as well as an opportunity to shape himself up and make his father proud. Hisaw left for training later that August and was sent to Sampson New York, he was deployed to Seattle, Washington where he was stationed on a freighter, the USS Haydes, set in the Pacific Ocean. Fred entered towards the end of the war and never saw any combat, his days consisted of working in the kitchen, cooking, and in his off time he and his peers played cards and joked around like young men do. He served for 18 months and in this time traveled all across the pacific reaching countries such as Japan and China. When he returned home Fred went back to college to earn an education. Hisaw attended the University of Missouri, where he met his wife, Zella, of 69 years and counting. He later became a professor at the University of Oregon where he taught Physiology and Science for 32 years. Today he is retired and finds join in a veterans group based out of McMinnville, Oregon, stationed at the Evergreen Aviation Museum, called the "Band of Brothers Oregon Veterans Association".
