Leader of first glider formation to drop behind German invasion coast defenses, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Murphy received the Purple Heart from Colonel O.W. Howland, Adjutant General of the 9th Air Force Troop Carrier Command. Colonel Murphy, wounded when his glider was shattered by Nazi mortar fire, is supported by Lieutenant Pearl E. Platt, air evacuation nurse, and air evacuation technicians. The photo was made at an English airfield where Murphy began his journey back to the States.
