Douglas Thomas Jacobson

Douglas Thomas Jacobson was a corporal in the military awarded the highest military achievement of the medal of honor. He put many years of service into the marines also getting a purple heart during his years of service. He was born November 25, 1925 in New York. When he was 17 he enlisted into the marine corps Reserve. He was awarded a medal of honor after the Battle of Iwo Jima during WW2. The US captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese army, during this Jacobson risked his life and stormed enemy positions destroying multiple enemy positions helping in achieving the island for the US, also saving many americans. He was only 19 years old when he did this. “I don’t know how I did it,”He later said, “I had one thing in mind-- getting off that hill.” During his time serving he also got his diploma that he never got the chance to get since he joined the military before graduating high school. After serving for many years in the marines and becoming a major he was finally discharged and his wife and him moved to New Jersey and then again to Florida. He died at the age of 74 at a hospital in Port Charlotte due to heart failure. He had 3 daughters and 2 grandchildren.
